Take just 5 minutes a day to start living a more positive life.
One of the hardest things to start doing is to shift the way our brain thinks on a regular basis.
For most of us, we are programmed to find the bad, the negatives in everyday life. To seek out problems, and fix them.
This causes us to look for the negative on a regular, default basis, instead of finding the positive in life.
So how can we start changing this way of thinking? I have a simple activity that will only take you a few minutes each day.
This activity will start shifting your mindset to seek out the positive in your daily life - leading to greater happiness, more opportunity and increased success.
You can do this activity alone, or with someone or multiple someones to encourage you.
So what is the activity....
Find 3 good things each day.
Thats it. 3 things. You can write 3 things, tell someone 3 things, or simply think 3 things.
All you have to do is actively find 3 good things that happened to you each day.
I find it very helpful to do this each night with my husband before bed.
This forces you to go over the past 24 hours - reliving all of the positive things that happened. You go through your day with a fine tooth comb, finding the positives, and leaving the negatives behind.
Slowly, this simple activity will actually retrain your brain to actively seek out more positivity, opportunity, and potential each day.
You are actually rewiring the way your brain sees and processes the world around you - and in turn you can completely change your experience.
When doing this activity, one of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to find the 3 most profound things that happened to you.
This could not be further from the truth. They by no means need to be big events, they just need to be specific.
Lets see some examples...
Here are my 3 things today:
1. I started my day off with a cool run through the woods.
2. I indulged in some left over pizza for lunch.
3. When I was finished with work today, I took of my bra and poured myself a rather large glass of wine, and curled up on the couch with a good book.
None of these are by any means profound. I'm sorry to disappoint you.
But by listing off these 3 things - I in fact relive them.
I am out in the woods in the cool morning air for my run. Thinking about how refreshed and awake I felt once I was done. I remember my lunch of yummy pizza leftovers that I indulged in since I began my day with a jog! And lastly, I relive the sense of relief when I got to take off my bra and pour myself a big glass of wine as I sat down on the couch with a good book.
Reliving these 3 simple things brings a smile to my face, and helps me to forget about any of the negatives that happened throughout the day.
I go to bed in a positive mindset, which helps me to wake up on the right side of the bed tomorrow.
I have heard of this same activity being helpful when it comes to gratitude.
Listing 3 things you are grateful for each day. If that sounds more fulfilling to you, go for it. At the end of the day, my moments of being grateful and moments of positivity are usually one in the same (who isn't grateful to take off their bra at the end of the day?!)
The last thing to remember is to stay consistent.
This is why it can help if you do this activity with someone else - say before bed with your spouse, or at the dinner table with your kids. Having someone to hold you accountable can be very helpful.
But regardless, if you want to see lasting results, stay consistent.
Give this activity a try for the next few weeks and see if you can notice a difference.
